Johannes Blom

Johannes Blom is a 38-year old surgeon working at the colorectal unit at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. He enjoys the combination of clinical work, teaching and research. The interest in colorectal cancer and screening started in the mid 90´s when he as a medical student at the University of Uppsala was involved in a pilot study of screening for colorectal cancer with flexible sigmoidoscopy. He qualified as doctor in 1998 and became specialist in general surgery in 2005. He continued his academic carrier parallel with clinical work and defended his thesis "Aspects of Participation in Sigmoidoscopy Screening for Colorectal Cancer" at Karolinska Intitutet in 2007 (available at: http://diss.kib.ki.se/2007/978-91-7357-187-6/).
Johannes has internationally contributed with articles, abstracts and as reviewer in the field of colorectal cancer screening. Being a member of several different professional organizations, e.g. the Swedish Surgical Society, the Swedish Society of Medicine and the Swedish Society of Gastroenterology, he also highlights screening issues among clinicians nationally. With a clinical review of colorectal cancer screening he was awarded "The Best Article in 2008" published in Lakartidningen, the paper of the Swedish Medical Association. Currently he is organizing several different studies within a newly started colorectal cancer screening program in the county of Stockholm.
